the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River
The banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees (looking for the nearly but not quite nonexistant fall color on Belle Isle in Detroit)
This is one of the many canals on Belle Isle that used to be used for canoing. We call it "the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees." The reason we call it that is because the water in the canal has a kind of murky greyish cast. Because of the reflection, you can't really see the color of the water. (This is a good thing! LOL!)

Wow, it's like a painting
ReplyDeleteThanks! :-D :-D
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! The colors, the place and the shot. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Fenix! :-D
ReplyDeleteWe were looking for fall color. I did think this was pretty! :-D
Wow! Spectacular! Beautiful! Stunning!
ReplyDeleteTHANKS SO VERY MUCH! YAY! :-D
ReplyDeleteWell even if it is a good thing I can't see the water, I think your photo is stunning.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Lavenderlady! :-D
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely photo, even if the description is anything but. :-)
ReplyDeleteWow, trop belle la photo. J'adore les reflets dans l'eau.....
ReplyDeleteVery nice composition and such beautiful color.
ReplyDeleteWell, you can't tell the water is murky in this photo. Looks pretty clear to me.
ReplyDeleteMore than beautiful! Don't have the words ... reflecting on it :)
ReplyDeletewoah! what colours!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful picture.
ReplyDeleteI don't think our Limpopo river ever looks quite so colourful, not even in autumn.
I love our fever trees, they very pretty.
Thank you erin, marie, clueless, rambling, anonymous, which, and crazy cow for you kind, thoughtful and nice comments. Crazy cow, I don't know where you are--but now I have a hint, at least.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous picture. It hardly looks real. What is the quote from, "Elephant's Child"? I SHOULD know.
ReplyDeleteI clicked on the pictures of Mack Ave., which were very cool, esp. the first because of the blocks of brightish color, and the last because of the three different elements. The CVS, well, it looks too familiar to fully appreciate!!
Will go see
Thanks, Leaf Lady. Yeah, I wasn't overly thrilled with the CVS shot.
ReplyDeleteThe Limpopo was immortalized in the short story "The Elephant's Child" by British author Rudyard Kipling, in the Just So Stories, where it is described as "the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees," where the "Bi-Coloured Python Rock-Snake" dwells. (From Wikipedia)
ReplyDeleteIt's the largest river in Africa. I've never seen it, never been to Africa, don't know fever trees, only know the quote, which is striking.
ReplyDeleteFunny comment, anonymous! LOL! :-D
