White Sun Chop Suey

Fine Chinese Food.

This is on Jefferson Across from Faith Church.

Jefferson is the road that more or less hugs the shore of the Detroit
River and Lake St. Clair. Farther North, it becomes Lakeshore. It is
the road we usually take to go to Belle Isle (driving south) and we
sometimes go to Metrobeach that way (driving north).

  1. Looks a little rough even for a Chinese restaurant.

  5. I don't think the restaurant is open any more. But I thought the sign was interesting--and the neighborhood.

  6. Mary, Thanks for the blog. I grew up in Detroit, but left at the early age of 8. Spent many a Sundays driving past lake St. Clair.

  7. I grew not far from the White Sun and haven't been back to Detroit for over 25 years. Out of curiosity I just googled the name and lane on this page. The restaurant looks the same and still has that parking lot to the right. They served the best Egg Foo Young I've ever tasted.

  9. I like Egg Foo Young! I should go back and see if it's even open!!! I was only driving by. Actually, I drive by fairly often, and need to check it out. I haven't posted anything here in a while, but I have pictures to post.

  10. I use to eat there in the 60's and 70's. Not far from Gino's Pizza, My uncle ate at the White Sun one night and as walking out of the restaurant front door, he walked into a Tommy Gun gangster shoot out! That was in the 1940's.

  12. My parents owned this restaurant for about 10 years, selling it in the mid 90's before moving to Florida. When they owned it, it was called the White Sun Cafe. I didn't even realize it was in the movie 8 Mile, that's wild.
