Bye Bye Ice Fisherman

If this warm weather keeps up, the rotting ice will be going out soon and the ice fisherman will have to retreat. They can fish in the water or wait until next year. I took these shots at Metrobeach over the weekend.

More art by Detroit artist Mary Taitt:

Colorplay, by Mary Stebbins Taitt. Digital painting.

I also painted this.

and made these quick sketches in a Moleskine sketchbook:

I'm working on filling in the final blank pages in a returned sketchbook that circulated around to 12 people in Jim Doran's Sketchbook exchange--I did these quickly with Faber-Castell and Pigma artist pigment pens. On the first chicken, I added a little white gouache. The second chicken is one of about 15 sketches I did on newspaper before I did the sketch in the Moleskine. On the last picture, I added a little colored pencil. The Moleskine is one with yellow paper, so they all look a little too yellow to suit me. Click images to view slightly larger.

Beautiful photos, Mary, but they scare me a little....

I really like your art!

I don't think I could sit on ice and fish. I'd be afraid it would break no matter how thick it was.

Love the art, especially the first chicken print. Great color.

Hi -I was looking for information about the east side of Detroit, and came across your wonderful photos and paintings! I really loved looking at them. You are inspiring me to get out and see more of Detroit. I hope you don't mind that I added a link to your blog on mine. Thank you for your beautiful work!

Thanks so much Marie, Pamela and Suzanne.

Every year, some ice fisherman and snowmobilers fall through the ice. I ope none of these do. As it gets warm, the ice starts to rot and soften.

I love those sketches...did you see the rooster my daughter had painted me? It was featured on my Pics and Pieces blog on Jan 15....I used to collect chicken things.

This is the time of year when there will inevitably be a fisherman who tests his luck and the ice fails and others have to hall his sorry butt back to dry land! :-)

And you're right; I've seen them sitting in slush up to their ankles trying to catch a little fishie!

Love all your art work. The digital painting is quite interesting...wonder how you did that?
