Bridge Theme-Day

Happy Theme-Day. I'm looking forward to seeing all your bridges. I decided to stick with Belle Isle Bridges.

1: Belle Isle Golf Bridge. You have to pay to walk on this bridge, it is only for the upscale and not normal peasant folk like me.

2: Bridge between the Belle Isle Casino and The Swan boats and Carolan.

3: The General McArthur Bridge between mainland Detroit and Belle Isle (also a part of Detroit), taken from Belle Isle. The nearly half mile-long bridge that takes you to Belle Isle today was originally constructed in 1923 and a meticulous renovation was completed in 1986.
In 1942, the bridge was renamed after General Douglas MacArthur. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I am sorry to say that November and December in Detroit is pretty grey and dismal (we are expecting snow and freezing rain tonight). Sorry.

In the background, you can also see the Ambassador Bridge, to Canada! You can also see the Renaissance Center and city of Detroit.

4. Detail of the General McArthur Bridge from Belle Isle.

Belle Isle is AMERICA' S LARGEST CITY-OWNED ISLAND PARK...

Detroit's city fathers purchased the 983-acre island in 1879 for $200,000, against the opposition of those who thought the price was too high. They elected to retain the name Belle Isle (beautiful
island) by which the property was popularly known.

In 1883, the designer of New York City's Central park, Frederick Law Olmstead, created the master plan for Belle Isle's transformation.

By 1889, visitors could enjoy the park via the islands' first wooden bridge.

Olmstead also helped select Cass Gilbert's design for the mammoth Scott Fountain, chosen over 93 other entries in a nationwide competition. Among Gilbert's other achievements was the design of the U.S. Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C.

Between 1903 and 1930, the Casino, the Aquarium, Whitcomb Conservatory, and Livingstone Lighthouse were designed by Albert Kahn, who was also selected for the General Motors and Fisher Buildings.

Be sure to check out all the other bridges! Over a hundred bridges!

Wow, Mary, what a great post. Lots of neat bridges this week (my favorite: the lovely red bridge you posted yesterday, what a gorgeous little thing it is!).

Re: your question about what's happening with the photos today, you are not the only one. I've checked most blogs last night and today and encountered the same bloody problem in 90% of the cases. Luckily, my photos don't do that - maybe be because I composed the post a couple of weeks ago? Who knows! I've tried different browsers and different settings, same difference. I think it's a Blogger thing. They've changed/messed with something. I really hope they get it fixed soon. Sometimes they "improve" too much, don't they?

All scenic bridges, the second photograph is nice combination of color and autumn landscape.

Thanks so much Fenix and Gwen! I appreciate your visit and kind comments.

Thanks Fenix for the feedback about the photo posts. I HATE their "improvement" and hope they revert to the old way. Maybe it was taking too much space on the server.

lovely set of pictures - I think blogger will be getting a lot of negative feedback about the changes and hopefully take action.

Thanks Joy, Old Man Lincoln and Hyde!

I really appreciate your kind comments.

You used to be able to give blogger direct feedback but Hyde, do you know how to do that now?

I enjoyed all the information that went with! Even though a grey day, love the birds in the foreground and steps into distance with your third photo :)
