The first sculpture piece is by Marshall Fredericks (a native Detroiter, thank you anonymous). I HATE this piece and the "Leaping Gazelle" at Belle Isle, but I love some of his other work. I hate this one and the one on Belle Isle because they and some of this other his animals look as though they have just been shot and are in their death throes, inappropriate for the ZOO if you ask me!!! I can't get past his portrayal to appreciate this work.
The eagle sculpture, by Dan Ostermiller, is much nicer. So is the pig sculpture, made from pumpkins and squashes for the Zoo Boo. And the regal eagle himself (or herself?), looking very much like a sculpture, is the best of all. YAY! Have a great holiday!

The eagle is a real one?
I thought as you did when I saw the photo of the deer (is it a deer?)
This eagle is real!!! The one at the bottom, and quite lively!
Let me check the name of the animal.
I think it's a gazelle.
I think the 1st sculpture might be a sable antelope from eastern Africa... Anyway I don't think it 'has been shot', the males do that before start running to hit another male, as they fight really hard! It's very impressive the noise they make with their horns on each other! But that's just how I see the sculpture :-)
The (2nd) sculpture of the eagle is awesome! At 1st I thought it was real. Glad you told the pig was made of pumpkins or I would not have noticied it... lol!
I like the pig!
WOW! THANKS, JM! I would feel a LOT better about the sculpture if what you say is true! I would be very happy about it, because there are a number of these sculptures around town and I always hate to look at them because I think they are dying--if I thought they were very much alive and ready to do battle, I would somehow feel much better about it!
THANKS, ERIN! YAY! (I like the pig, too!)
