Swan Boat at Belle Isle

Swan Boat at Belle Isle, by Mary Stebbins Taitt. They are rented by the half hour and pretty expensive. The pond is roped in so you can't ride very far. Perhaps this is to not disturb the geese, ducks and herons. I hope so, because otherwise it's just mean. Later, I may post more. I have one with swan boats and real swans.

The Casino at Belle Isle

The Casino at Belle Isle, by Mary Stebbins Taitt. The original Casino was built in 1887, and the current structure was redesigned by Albert Kahn in 1907. It was was once said to be the finest casino in the United States. It is now used for a meeting place.

In case anyone was following my "daily" photoblog on a daily basis and noticed a lapse, it was because biker buddy accidentally cut the internet cable with the hedge trimmers Thursday and I haven't had any internet connection. Sorry.

Belle Isle Aquarium

Belle Isle Aquarium, by Mary Stebbins Taitt. The Belle Isle Aquarium was once the longest continuously operated public aquarium, but it is now closed. If anyone is rich and would like to fun it, it would be wonderful to have it open again. (This picture was taken in 2005.)

Fountain at Belle Isle

Fountain at Belle Isle, by Mary Stebbins Taitt. At dusk, with the lights. The James Scott Memorial Fountain faces the Detroit Cityscape at the closest end of Belle Isle. James Scott was an eccentric gambler and controversial socialite who bequeathed $500,000 to build a fountain on Belle Isle along with a life-sized statue of himself. The fountain is constructed of Vermont White Marble and has 109 water outlets in the shape of human heads, dolphins, frogs, turtles, lionesses and animal horns.

Detroit is an international port. The big boats go by up and downriver constantly. The are truly impressive. This is only a small portion of this boat.

Fish Flies!

Detroit is known for it's fish flies, especially near the water and at certain seasons. This picture was taken last night by a light. Many of the lights looked like this.

To answer a few questions, I'd taken a close-up of one but haven't had time to post it--this may seem odd, but it's on a different computer. Here's a drawing. They are mayflies. More comments about fish flies.
