The Ice Palace at Dusk

We visited the "Ice Palace" (sorry about the name) on Belle Isle at dusk on Sunday night. It had been warm for several days and you can see some parts of the Christmas trees that the ice is built on and the water spraying at the tip. Above the group of people toward the left, you can see the Renaissance Center and downtown Detroit and in the center distance, the lights of the city of Detroit. It looks far away but it is actually very close.

How beautiful and serene with those pastel tones.

Love the purple and pink.

I'm living vicariously through winter with the help of bloggers - everyone seems to have a crapload of snow and ice. Brrr!

Great colorful dusk pic. Detroit Moxie (http://www.detroitmoxie.com/) has been following the "Ice Palace" but I haven't made it down to see it yet. Maybe next week.

Thanks all! :-D

Eric, you'd better wish for some colder weather, the ice Palace* (Or Ice tree--I went to Moxie's site--thanks!) isn't doing too well lately becasue it's been too warm during the day.

*Everyone I know calls it "The Ice Palace," or a perverted version of that.

Gorgeous colors, Mary! This ice thingy looks like a waterfall...until one notices the trees poking through the top...very interesting, though!

I never knew it existed. I might have to drop by and see it.

As long as it's been cold, it is always very pretty--like a frozen waterfall! It's across from the old Belle Isle Zoo.

Belle Isle brings back great memories for me from childhood trips to the beautiful park with my parents and brother who have all since passed away. Thank you for sharing a lovely photo with us.

Is this an annual tradition?

Mary Stebbins Taitt said...

They did it every year for a long time--then the pipes froze and broke and they missed a couple years--then they fixed it up and started again.

When it's been very cold, all the branches disappear, but we've been having a warm spell.
